Why you should take the ICT in Civil Engineering and Infrastructure course

ICT has become a more integral part of project agreements thanks to the 2019 Description of Services for Civil Engineering (YBA19). As a result, ICT specifications are increasingly encountered in tenders for large and small, and/or combined building and civil engineering projects.

The ICT in Civil Engineering and Infrastructure course gives you insight into digital agreement structures, digital collaboration, and sustainability in civil engineering – and about the importance of focusing on constructive communication and collabo-ration at the interfaces between stakeholders.
You will get:

• An overview of the ICT field in civil engineering and infrastructure – for both newcomers and experienced professionals
• Skills to participate in and lead ICT work
• A theoretical and practice-oriented understanding of digital transformation and the new requirements it brings to the civil engineering industry
• A focus on how digitalisation can create better projects and stronger collab-oration – especially when paradigms are not dictated, but value is instead found in the interfaces and interaction between stakeholders.

Through a general introduction to ICT on civil engineering projects, you will gain a theoretical and practical understanding of ICT in general, as well as the challenges specific to civil engineering projects. You will get an overview of the ICT field, an understanding of digital transformation, and the skills to participate in and lead ICT work.

 

Day 1:
• Building Information Modeling (BIM) – what is it, in general?
• BIM and ICT in civil engineering
• The role and responsibilities of the ICT manager
• ICT tools – requirements and management: where does the value lie?
• Group exercises

Day 2:
• ICT management in civil engineering – seen through the contractor's lens
• Workshop: Building a complete set of agreements on ICT matters. Discus-sion of the consequences for the entire value chain

The workshop combines presentations, group work, and discussions. The task is solved in groups, with coaching and input throughout the process from the instructor, other groups, and in plenary. Participants are encouraged to take a step-by-step approach to the task, with ongoing reflection throughout the process.

• ICT in civil engineering – real-world practice

 

You will get, over three intensive days, both a general introduction to managing ICT on civil engineering projects, and you will also gain an in-depth understanding of the challenges specific to civil engineering projects.

The course has a full focus on the project – and on how digitalisation can help you achieve significantly better collaboration, get a firm grip on contractual arrangements, and how digitalisation and BIM can support sustainability on projects.

The aim is that, after the course, you will:

- Have the necessary overview to understand the digital opportunities that are crucial for a successful project

- Understand the background of digital services and have a firm grasp of the contractual arrangements and the complete set of agreements. 

- Be able to draw up agreements on digital deliverables that are precise enough to reduce the risk of conflicts between parties.

- Be able to take advantage of how digitalisation eases collaboration between the individual stakeholders – if it is properly managed

- Be able to contribute to (even) better collaboration and fewer misunderstand-ings and conflicts

- Have a clear understanding of where and how the management and coordina-tion of digitalisation/ICT in civil engineering projects can best be handled – so that you, your company, and your projects get the maximum benefit. 

- Have insight into how digitalisation and BIM can support sustainability on pro-jects.

Everything is fully focused on practice, so you take home insights and tools you can put to use immediately.

And this applies to all types of civil engineering projects – not "just" the large ones.

You will also receive a certificate of your competences from a recognised course provider, stating what you have learned and what specific skills it gives you.

The course is aimed at anyone who faces requirements, works with, or is about to work with digitalisation and sustainability in the civil engineering industry – both public and private. 

In other words, this course is for you if you want to understand and manage the relationship between agreement documents and their practical use – and benefit from experience, knowledge of the pitfalls, and best practice.

This may include future and current ICT coordinators, ICT managers, and others across the civil engineering industry – but it may also include project managers and project directors who want to become even better at understanding and engaging in digital projects.

There will be participants/instructors from across the entire value chain. This is an important point that makes a course like this especially rewarding for everyone in the value chain.

(As a participant without prior in-depth knowledge of the ICT agreement basis, you will gain a solid understanding of the principles behind how requirements are set for deliverables)

The infrastructure industry is facing a significant digital transformation. There are many smaller players facing ICT and sustainability requirements, and several large civil engineering projects are currently underway. There is therefore a strong need for a common, standardised approach to information management in design and construction, and for a general upskilling across the industry – especially among those working on road and rail projects.

Understanding digitalisation as a cross-disciplinary field
Good digital collaboration can be decisive for projects being delivered on agreed price, time, and quality. But this is only possible once all parties have insight into and understanding of each other's benefits and challenges, and actively support the collaboration and the project as a whole. It is not enough to optimise within your own organisation.
The course seeks to create an understanding of the good digital civil engineering project as one that generates shared value for the project, the client, and ultimately for all participating parties.
It is aimed at project managers, ICT managers, or other professionals in the industry – from public and private clients to consultants and contractors – wherever digitalisation is involved.

Gain theory and practice-oriented knowledge of a new field
Digitalisation has finally reached the civil engineering industry, but we can also sense that it is new for many, and the first experiences are only just starting to come in.

That's why I think it's hugely relevant to be involved in and teach on this particular course, as it gives the opportunity to give participants a solid introduction to the field, spiced with in-depth knowledge.

I think it will be a great starting point for many in the civil engineering industry, especially project managers who can see the new opportunities or are being faced with the first digitalisation requirements. But also for those who are new to the field or have limited experience – in other words, people who want to build both theory and practical experience on top of their existing knowledge.

Forstå digitalisering som tværfaglig disciplin

Det gode digitale samarbejde kan være afgørende for, at projekter kommer i mål til aftalt pris, tid og kvalitet. Men det er først muligt, når alle parter har indsigt i og forståelse for andres gevinster og udfordringer og aktivt understøtter samarbejdet og helheden i projektet. Det er ikke nok at optimere i egen organisation.
